Introduction
CTO Balloon Dilatation Catheter used in interventional cardiology procedures. CTO stands for "Chronic Total Occlusion," which indicates a complete blockage or obstruction of a coronary artery that has been present for an extended period, typically more than three months.
During a CTO procedure, an interventional cardiologist may use a CTO balloon dilatation catheter to attempt to recanalize or reopen the occluded artery. The catheter is designed to navigate through the coronary arteries until it reaches the site of the blockage. Once in place, the balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated, which exerts pressure on the occlusion, compressing the plaque or clot and widening the artery lumen, thereby restoring blood flow to the affected heart muscle.
CTO interventions are complex and challenging procedures that require specialized skills and equipment. They are typically performed in patients who have significant coronary artery disease and have not responded well to other forms of treatment, such as medication or stent placement.
